Sometimes it is hard to explain all the benefits a school garden can bring to the students. There are thousands of teaching opportunities.
Besides learning how to grow vegetables, there are many things to learn in an outdoor classroom like the school garden. Math: Students have calculated how many seeds will be needed or the number of rows for each bed. Taking into consideration the number of beds and the inches each seed needs to grow. There are a lot of Math opportunities that can be found in the garden. Science: Students learn about photosynthesis, chemical reactions, and the effect of plant food and water on their plants. Also they learn about soil quality and many other aspects of Science. Reading: Students can read seed packets and instructions on planting from the Internet. They can also keep a garden journal, which helps with writing skills. History: Students can learn about heirloom plants and what plants are good for the region. Geography can also be taught from learning about the planting zones of the U.S. Health: What better way to learn about good health than by growing your own vegetables. Students of all ages can benefit by spending time in the school garden. Update for Summer of 2017: Although we had too much rain in the spring and then a drought in the summer the garden provided us with good tomatoes, lettuce and cabbages. The watermelons were amazing. The salad bed also did well. We did not do a fall garden because we ordered seeds but they did not come in on time. The students were able to enter bread and butter pickles in the County Fair from the cucumbers they raised.
At the present time OSU Extension will be providing curriculum for 1st-4th garden class and they will learn about healthy eating. We have added bathrooms to our garden. |
